Link Popularity Explained

Many search engines use a 'Link Popularity' system to determine which pages appear high in their rankings for a particular search. At its simplest level, your page has a value based on the number of times that other web sites link to your page.

Google uses a more complicated form of Link Popularity which it refers to as 'PageRank'. They explain it as follows:

"PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Although Link Popularity of your site plays a major part in its final position on the search engines, it is not the only factor. Google, for example, combines sophisticated analysis of the content of your site. However, no matter how well 'optimised' your content is, if you do not have any incoming links from other sites, you will not perform well on the search engines.
